but will we get to see all six?

star wars is returning to theaters in glorious 3d!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, i know, it is phantom menace. okay, lets deal with this right away. the prequels are not like the original trilogy: i should hope not! film making and storytelling has changed since the original trilogy not to mention the change in the setting. you need to have a peaceful republic for palpatine to manipulate and you need to have an innocent boy to grow up to become the tragic anti-hero darth vader. jar jar: okay, i will give you that one, i can not defend jar jar. qui-gon was right, he has no intelligence. darth maul: awesome, no complaints here but had to mention him because he is awesome. if for no other reason, you should return to the theater just for darth maul.

over the next six years all six star wars movies will be released in 3d at the rate of one movie per year. so why begins with episode one (the prequels) instead of episode four )the original trilogy)? because it is episode one. the movies will be released in episode / story order thus taking us from beginning to end in the life of darth vader. but it seems as if george lucas has grown tired of mainstream hollywood, because there is a catch. if phantom menace 3d is not received well, if the fans do not appreciate the time and effort put into making it a 3d movie, then george lucas is done and there will be no more. in other words, if we do not see episode one we do not get to see episode six. if you do not watch the trade federation you will not watch the second death star. i happen to enjoy episode one, it is not my favorite (three and six are) but i feel it is a nice setup for the story that follows. but even if you do not like episode one at least come and see darth maul in 3d so we can all see luke skywalker in 3d.

so why do i say george lucas has grown tired of mainstream hollywood? on january 17, 2012, the new york times published an interview they did with george lucas concerning his upcoming release of the movie red tails. in this article george discusses his frustrations with the studio editing his early movies, thx-1138 and american graffiti and how he vowed to be financially independent enough that the studio will never be able to make the final edit on one of his films. when we fans rail on and on about the prequels and the re-edits george has made of the original trilogy, george responds with “fine. but my movie, with my name on it, that says i did it, needs to be the way i want it.” the fans response to the edits and the prequels has been as gut wrenching as the studios editing his films. so he is done, “why would i make any more,” lucas says of the “star sars” movies, “when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?” i suspect that this also plays into why he has chosen to not continue with the star wars in 3d project if the first film is poorly received. george really is not the type of director who is comfortable with the blockbuster movie. george does not make movies for large audiences, he makes movies he wants to see and enjoys sharing his movies but with all our scorn and ranting of late lucas has decided that he is done sharing. after red tails, george will be limiting his movies to the esoteric artsy films of his roots and limit his screening to art-houses where people share his love of the obscure cerebral films like his first movie thx-1138. if there are to be any new star wars movies it will be because george has signed them over to someone else. but, interestingly enough, he does leave the door open for a fifth indianna jones and a possible star wars tv show based around bounty hunters. perhaps we can blame jar jar for not only the death of the republic but also the death of the star wars saga?
